Species Spotlight: Zebra Shark

The Grand Reef at Discovery Cove offers the ultimate in adventure for those who want to get up and close with zebra sharks. While snorkeling, guests can marvel through a 10-foot-tall panoramic window at the zebra sharks and for those less daring, they can enjoy the view from the above foot bridge.

Zebra Sharks are docile, slow-moving. non-dangerous to humans and can be easily approached underwater. As a result of the distinctive patterned ridges running down their bodies, the zebra shark is also commonly known as the leopard shark.

Did you know?

  • Are nocturnal and spend most of the day resting motionless on the sea floor
  • Their slender, flexible body allows it to wiggle into narrow holes in search of food, while using its small powerful suction mouth extract prey
  • Found in Southeast Asia, Southern African and Western and Northern Australia
  • When full grown, some can reach up to 8 feet long
