Last month, SeaWorld Orlando was proud to join in the inaugural Shark Con in Tampa, Fla., as a sponsor and exhibitor.
Shark Con’s goal aims to raise awareness for shark and ocean conservation, in hopes to educate, entertain, and inform the general public about the importance of sharks and the ocean. Conservation groups, entertainers, artists, scientists, and various vendors all came together to give attendees of the conference a memorable experience.
SeaWorld Orlando’s Aquarium department was on site to help educate attendees about sharks, SeaWorld’s conservation efforts, and even offered some free, fun activities for families. SeaWorld Shark experts were on hand throughout the weekend to answer questions about sharks. Take a look at this exciting video that highlights SeaWorld’s care for sharks who live at the park. Shark jaws, skin and egg cases were available also for a hands-on experience for convention goers.
Shark Con attendees were able to learn about the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund and some of the shark and ocean-related conservation projects the Fund supports, including The Rising Tide Project. SeaWorld’s “Rising Tide” initiative is funding marine fish breeding research that will provide a sustainable tropical fish population and lessen the dependency on coral reefs for home aquariums.
“It’s always fun and rewarding to share time with people who are interested in, and love the ocean as much as SeaWorld SHARK EXPERTS do,” said Becki Orze, SeaWorld Orlando’s Senior Aquarist, one of the primary Aquarists who works directly with sharks on a daily basis. “Shark Con was an amazing experience for our team because we were able to share conservation knowledge with interested guests and help them have a better understanding of the big blue sea around them.”
The real hit of the weekend was a family station where families could make their own necklaces with fossilized shark teeth. Several kid-sized desks allowed kids to work on shark-themed activity sheets that included coloring and a fun word search.
Shark Con was a great event and our team was proud to be a supporter and exhibitor; we look forward to next year! Stay tuned.
