October is National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month

by Staff

Our dedication to animals extends beyond those with flippers and fins. October is national Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog month, and we want to make sure you know all that we do to help this effort. Did you know that our company promotes the adoption of cats and dogs from local shelters through a program called Happy Tails?

SeaWorld’s Happy Tails was developed to encourage adoptions of homeless dogs and cats from local animal shelters. The program provides pet lovers with two free single-day admissions to SeaWorld when they adopt a dog or cat from a participating animal shelter. So far the program has helped more than 22,000 cats and dogs find loving homes!

But wait, there's more... SeaWorld Orlando's popular show Pets Ahoy! has been supporting rescued animals since the show’s opening in 2000. Martha Davis, supervisor of Pets Ahoy! shared more details with us…

Where were the stars of Pets Ahoy! before finding fame at SeaWorld?

All of the dogs and cats seen in the show have come from animal shelters or breed rescues. Even the rats, skunks and pot-bellied pig in the show came from rescue facilities!

What is the most rewarding part of working with these animals?

So many of our animals were previously turned into shelters because they were considered "untrainable.” It’s so rewarding to work with an animal that we know may not have been adopted, and show them the love and attention they need to be happy and become stars at Pets Ahoy!

What is the biggest message you’d like guests to walk away with after watching Pets Ahoy?

We hope that after guests watch the show they’ll be encouraged to check their local animal shelters when searching for a forever friend. There are so many animals in need of loving homes, and it’s great to be able to share that message with our guests.

What tips can you share with us for training our pets at home?

We get to spend 8-10 hours a day with our animals working on their training, but you can get the same results with your animals at home with a little love, patience, and an understanding of the capabilities of your animal. So many behavioral challenges with animals can be avoided or fixed just by adjusting how you react to them.
