When you stroll along The Waterfront at SeaWorld Orlando you probably notice the quaint seaside village shops and restaurants, but have you ever seen those zany guys in bright yellow pants that bring the streets to life? At first you might mistake them for park maintenance until you see them trying to squeeze one of their sidekicks into a trash can. They are the slapstick comedy routine known as the Longshoremen who were voted by the readers of the Orlando Weekly as “Best Street Artist.”
We recently sat down with the Longshoremen to learn more about the guys who bring nonstop laughter to The Waterfront on a daily basis.
Q: When did you begin performing at SeaWorld?
A: We have been performing at SeaWorld Orlando since 2003 and back when The Waterfront first opened they were looking for juggling sailors and the longshoremen were born out of that concept. Obviously there was no ship or water so we decided the next best thing would be the people that help sailors - the longshoremen. We built our routine with typical things you would find a longshoremen working with such as cargo, crates and ladders.
Q: Recently, you were voted by the readers of the Orlando Weekly as one of the “Best Street Artist” how did it feel to get the recognition?
A: It’s cool to get recognized for doing something that we love to do. We get a lot of support from our fans that come out to see us several times a year. Our shows are always changing and our recent performance was based around Summer Nights and we will have a different show for Spooktacula, Bands, Brew & BBQ and Christmas. As performers we need to keep changing it and keeping it fresh.
Q: Why do you think people are so drawn to your slapstick humor?
A: We are a bit of a hidden gem. Our showtimes or act is not listed in the park so at first people mistake us as just workers until one of us gets hit with a trash can. We let people know it is ok to laugh and we encourage them to get involved in the show because we feed off their reactions.
Q: What do you enjoy most about performing at The Waterfront in SeaWorld Orlando?
A: Without a doubt the crowd reaction. Our humor appeals a lot to the younger kids but it is amazing to see how our physical comedy appeals to a broad audience. It is nice to see a whole family laughing.
Q: How long does it take to develop a routine?
A: About two months and the ideas usually come about from a brainstorm session or we might incorporate something that SeaWorld is passionate about such as recycling. We have one skit that is just about getting one of us in a trash can.
Don't forget to check out the Longshoremen's new performance this fall during Spooktacular at SeaWorld Orlando. As usual, I am sure they will leave you laughing uncontrollably.
