Getting to Know SeaWorld’s Manager of Pyrotechnics, Marty Steinke

Summer Nights features an awesome fireworks and fountain show, and sure it takes a lot of carefully planned work to make the "oohs" and "awes" happen. Enter Marty Steinke. With 25 years of experience, we are proud to call Marty the manager of pyrotechnic operations for our parks. Not only does he have a booming career, he also has won many prestigious awards in the industry for his spectacular work.

Q: How did you get into the pyrotechnics field?
A: I started with SeaWorld in what was called Scenic Arts working on set schematics and the fabrication of our theatrical set pieces. One day, I was approached to assist an outside company with a small fireworks display in the park, which was later supported internally. That was when I fell in love. After gaining tons of knowledge, I came up with a manual for our team. The manual was then adopted for all parks. I was honored and started touring all the parks implementing pyrotechnic standards.

Q: What makes our parks’ pyrotechnics unique?
A: To create a unique look in our displays, we work closely with vendors to develop products. This includes how the effects are constructed, which enhances performance, colors, visual effect looks, and reducing impact on the environment.

Q: What’s the best part about working with fireworks?
A: A: My biggest love is the response from our audience, and my goal is for all our parks to have the greatest and safest pyrotechnic displays. At times I’ll even walk out among our guests just to listen to their comments!
