Dave Eden has been a part of the Discovery Cove family since opening the park 12 years ago (and part of the SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment family for 24 years). He began his journey as a dolphin trainer, and is now the Assistant Curator of the aviculture and small mammal teams at Discovery Cove. Most recently, his role included being the project manager of Discovery Cove's newest addition -- Freshwater Oasis – which just opened last week! We sat down with Dave to get some insight into his role with this amazing new attraction, and with the incredible animals that call Discovery Cove home…
Q: What kinds of animals do you encounter during a typical day?
A: I encounter about 100 species of birds as well as dolphins, African tortoises and a variety of small mammals like sloths, anteaters, armadillos and kinkajous. Now, I am thrilled to have the privilege of working with Asian small-clawed otters again as well as marmoset monkeys.

Q: What's your role in the all-new Freshwater Oasis attraction?
A: I supervise the animal exhibits found in the Freshwater Oasis, which included creating and maintaining an enriching environment to showcase the fun behavior of the otters and marmosets. They’re some of the most social and playful animals on the planet and definitely provide an incredible amount of antics that amaze our guests.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A: I really enjoy seeing the reactions of our guests as they get a better understanding and appreciation of the animals as they experience their up-close interactions. I also enjoy being a part of the close-knit Discovery Cove family that always goes the extra mile for the guests, the animals and each other.

At Discovery Cove guests can swim with dolphins, snorkel with fish and rays, hand-feed tropical birds, relax on pristine beaches, and now encounter even more animals: Asian small-clawed otters and marmoset monkeys. Freshwater Oasis, where you can see these new animals, is the newest attraction at Discovery Cove. Designed with a rainforest canopy above and sparkling-clear springs below, Freshwater Oasis is a natural fit within Discovery Cove’s tropical atmosphere.
