Celebrating World Oceans Day!

SeaWorld San Diego joins communities around the globe today to celebrate World Oceans Day, giving guests the opportunity to learn more about the planet’s oceans and ways to help protect them. Today SeaWorld is featuring ocean-themed crafts and activities at our Pole to Pole gift shop along with a SeaWorld animal rescue team meet-and-greet. We also presented the proceeds from the first inaugural Pole to Pole Fun Run to the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute.

In observance of World Oceans Day, we are also officially unveiling our SeaWorld Rescue Plaza (located outside the west entrance to Shamu Stadium). SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Animal Ambassador Julie Scardina helped unveil the Plaza, along with Park President John Reilly and San Diego Oceans Foundation President John Valencia.

The new Rescue Plaza features two video screens with footage of turtles, birds and marine mammals that were rescued, rehabilitated and returned to the wild this past year. At a special display at the Rescue Plaza today, the park’s animal rescue team members are sharing information about the SeaWorld Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Program with park guests. The animal care experts have a display of net, crab traps, hooks, rope and other fishing gear entanglement and debris that can cause life-threatening illnesses to marine animals.

In the last four decades, SeaWorld San Diego has rescued more than 6,000 animals — giving them a second lease on life. Overall, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, which includes SeaWorld San Diego and its sister parks, has rescued more than 20,000 animals.
