Animal Care Up-Close: Update on Blink the Sea Lion

A large number of California sea lion pups are beaching along the state's shoreline, and the SeaWorld Rescue Team continues to come to the aid of these animals in need of help. Sometimes during the rehabilitation process, surgery is required in order to give these animals a second chance at life.

Meet Blanche, the Orphaned Manatee Calf Rescued July 2014

For the last week of Manatee Awareness Month we would like to give you an update on our youngest manatee rescue of the year. Last July, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) brought a young manatee orphan weighing only 48 pounds to our facility to receive care and rehabilitation. We’re excited to officially introduce her. Her name is Blanche, and she’s a special girl!

As we enter into a new year, it’s inspiring to look back and reflect on all that was accomplished the year before. Here at SeaWorld Orlando, a large part of what makes us who we are is the incredible animal rescue, rehabilitation and return efforts that happen on a daily basis.

From tiny newborn turtle hatchlings to manatees weighing more than half a ton, we’ve had the extraordinary privilege to care for some amazing animals and then return them to their natural environment, which is always our goal.

The Three R’s in Action!

Our animal care team’s duties revolve around the three R’s: Rescue, Rehabilitate and Return. Recently the three R’s were in action at SeaWorld San Diego.

In mid-October, SeaWorld rescued a sub-adult male California sea lion on a San Diego beach. The following day, the team rescued an adult female harbor seal on another nearby beach. Both animals had fishing line around their neck that had cut quite deeply into their flesh. It took SeaWorld’s rescue team a while to rescue the harbor seal, as she was quite strong and of good size.
