Jen Miller, Senior Aviculturist

Hi my name is Jen Miller,  when I graduated from San Diego State University in 1993 with a degree in Public Administration, and of course my family took me out to dinner to celebrate.  That’s when it happened, my parents sprang “THE” question on me, you know the one.....“So, what are you going to do now? “ Well at that moment I took a deep breath and said “I want to work with animals” and let’s just say it felt like everyone in the restaurant stopped and turned to look at what my parents were going to say.  That’s  when I was given some of the best advice in my life from my father.  He told me that I should choose a career that I have a passion for and that I will love to do for the rest of my life, even if has nothing to do with the degree I just earned, I was  going to be working for the rest of my life, make it count.

So I took that advice and went with my heart, I applied and was hired in the SeaWorld Education Department in 1994 and within a year I was hired into the Bird Department where I have been working ever since.  I can honestly say I love my job!  Whether I'm working with Emperor penguins, walking water monitor  or traveling with river otters on PR, working in the bird department is the best job in the world.  I  hope through my blogs that I can give guests a rare glimpse of what it is like to work with some of the most amazing animals in the world.  Show people the lighter maybe even funny side of working with animals, and maybe along the way inspire someone else to follow their heart when it comes to their passions.
