My life in the entertainment business began on my fifth birthday. My family ‘volunteered’ me to participate in a movie special effects demonstration and before I could say ‘no,’ I was on stage in front of hundreds of strangers. I was lead to a motorcycle that I promptly got on – backwards. For some reason, the audience found this amusing... Through the magic of 1970’s special effects, a freeway scene was projected behind me. Curious as to what the audience was seeing, I kept turning around to look at the screen. The host kept telling me to keep my eyes on the road which caused the audience to roar with more laughter.

Reflecting on that day, my career path could have gone one of three ways. One: absolutely nothing; I would have pursued a far more reputable profession other than show business…Two: I could have become an actor; these people loved me - get me an agent! Three: How did they create this magic and how can I be a part of it?! I chose option three and found my calling working backstage away from the limelight. In college I enrolled in theater classes where I learned how to build scenery, paint backdrops and build props. I began my career at SeaWorld in 1993 in Food Services not realizing that SeaWorld had a department in which my artistic skills would be useful. For the past nine years I’ve been a part of the Theming Services department as a scenic craftsperson. In this role my duties range from aging newly built crates for Shipwreck Reef Café to recreating the set from Spooky Kooky Castle. It’s a neat twist of fate that I’m a part of the creation of props and set pieces for the four unique shows at Sea Lion and Otter Stadium since Clyde and Seamore’s hi-jinks were always a favorite part of visiting the park every week growing up. It can be a challenge to create props for animals but it’s very rewarding to hear an audience react to something my fingerprints were on.

Through this blog, you’ll get to join me behind the scenes to visit our off-site workshop where incredibly talented graphic designers, sign makers, set builders fiberglass experts and scenic painters create signage and sets for events such as SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration, specialty props for Pets Rule! and rehab work inside of the park’s many exhibits and aquariums.  We begin at 6:30 am so we are sort of an anonymous bunch and our work is often unseen but our impact to the guest experience is huge. On a daily basis we are installing, refreshing or repairing themed elements from Shipwreck Island to Wild Arctic and everything in between! I hope you enjoy getting an inside look at how we keep the park looking great and how we put together our seasonal events. And best of all, you can sleep in and you won’t get any paint on your clothes!
